The are a couple places which come to mind if one wants to find some colour in their pan. One of which was mentioned is near Cape Spencer about a kilometers hike in, I believe at Millican Lake someone correct me if I'm wrong.

For those in Nova Scotia, I am aware that Cunard beach is a known place to go panning. At Oven's Natural Park you can 'rent' a gold pan for the recreational panning. The Acadia Gold Mining Company used to have a gold mine in the area, and the park has a small museum devoted to the mining operations.
